Overcoming the Fear of Death

Death is the greatest fear that ordinary human beings have. It is the epitomy of all our fears especially the fear of the unknown. This fear also captures our fierce attachment to our own lives. The survival instinct that evolved in all biological beings for millennia also adds on to the fear of death and our passion for life. Yet as the saying goes, “Life is just a blink between two eternities”. What then is death? It is just the transition phase to eternal life. If we live in constant remembrance that we are really souls on a pilgrimage, then the mystery and fear of death is unveiled for what it really is. It is just a break on the journey, a bend on the road for another adventure, another phase of our soul’s evolution. Yet again, death takes on another significance…it reminds us to live our lives now to the fullest and celebrate each part of the journey. It gives us courage to stand for what is right even at the point of death… It gives us the energy and inspiration to always make of our acts as if it’s the last act we have on earth. And our actions takes on an aura of power, of deliberateness, of abandon, of bravery, and of celebration. For life is such a beauty and yet it is not ours to possess. It is just ours to live with gusto, choice, and enjoyment. Then we will make every moment count and every encounter meaningful. Our bodies, heart, mind, and will become integrated with continuous practice and we become great souls in the process. The great truth is this: We are not our bodies….we are our souls.

The Realities of the Soul

Mystics and sages past and present all say that if we are to remember prematurely all our past lives, without proper spiritual preparation, we might not be able to forgive ourselves. This could be harmful rather than beneficial.

This could be harmful if we still see ourselves as physical bodies who have souls since our identification with our physical bodies would drown us in pain and hurt and non-acceptance of all our past deeds in our past lives. It is like identifying our person with what we wear. If we are able to look at our different clothes in different times, then we will laugh at our fashion sense.

Yet if we begin to see ourselves as souls who have physical bodies, then we are slowly spiritually preparing ourselves to be able to remember all our past lives. In doing so, remembering all our past lives will bring us a wealth of wisdom and experience while we are able to accept our past mistakes with sobriety, equanimity and serenity. It is so easy to think of ourselves as souls. It just takes a little practice and a change of perspective. If we only change our point of view and start looking at ourselves as souls, then magic and laughter will dawn in our lives. The heaviest problem will seem light. Our fear of death is greatly diminished. We will find no need to tell lies. Wisdom slowly grows in our souls and compassion springs from our hearts. We will be able to live in the mystery that is life and celebrate life to the fullest. We will have an unending source of strength. Our relationships would improve and we will become persons that would really make the world a better place to live in. Release the magic of the soul! Soulmagic!

Learn the ways of a child and learn more about your world

Learn the ways of a child and learn more about your world

When we begin to think of ourselves as souls instead of just physical bodies, there dawns an exciting understanding of our lives and the lives of the souls we touch. For one, we develop a profound respect for each person as we consider them as eternal and powerful spirits out to remember their original blessedness. We establish a deep interconnectedness with all human beings as all of us are souls on a pilgrimage and adventure in this wonderful life.
